If you have not been to see a counsellor before, you might wonder what happens in counselling. Reading these blog posts, you may think that a counselling session is where the counsellor tells you what to do. In reality, that could not be further from the truth.
Counselling is where I listen to you. You should do most of the talking. I’m just there to help you make sense of what is happening in your life. I know some things about human development, interventions and use specific modalities. However, you are the expert in your life. You have inside knowledge about yourself that I do not know. My questions are meant to help you share your expertise so that together we can shape a pathway forward for you.
This means that you need to be honest about yourself and your situation. That can be really painful and difficult, but I’m there to support you as you face the truth. My aim is to create a safe environment where all the stuff can be unpacked. We can explore ideas and you can try some strategies that might help. You’ll pick up some new tools, learn some new skills and gain some insights. Empowering you to find agency is a much better counselling skill than me telling you what I think you should do.
Read the blog posts if you want general information and some different strategies to try. If you want to go deeper, explain your emotions in a non-judgemental space where you’re held in high regard or get some support from a real person, feel free to make an appointment. I’d love to meet you and see where you’d like the process of counselling to take you. You can find out for yourself, what happens in counselling.
