When to see a counsellor

How do I know if I need to see a counsellor? It’s a good question. There are many reasons why someone may make an appointment to see me, but the main ones are:

  • To express how you are experiencing life in a non-judgemental setting
Sometimes, all it takes is being able to talk and communicate what is happening for you, without worrying what the other person thinks about you. Emotions can be heavy to carry by ourselves, so having a place to unload can really help.
  • If you’re feeling stuck
Some emotions come and don’t seem to want to go. Grief can be one of these. We can find ourselves stuck in grief, unable to move on with our lives. Having a person to talk you about what or who you’ve lost and working on strategies to reconnect with life can bring healing.
  • To help you make a decision
Some decisions just tie us in knots. Seeing a counsellor can help you identify your values, your fears, your questions and guide you so that you reach the best outcome for you. A counsellor doesn’t have a vested interest in the decision you come to, and that detachment can create a safe space for you to explore what you really want and need.
  • Learning how to Cope
Life throws us some really tough challenges, and we may not have the resources to manage by ourselves. A counsellor can offer support and help so that you become more resilient, reduce stress and cope in a crisis. Gaining insight into our responses to triggers, how to support our children and how to take care of ourselves can give you a toolbox of strategies that can be used for years to come.
  • To grow
Investing in counselling while things are going well can provide you time to practice new skills. You don’t have to be in trouble to see a counsellor. Exploring who you are and how you experience life can be useful at any age or stage.

Of course, there will be as many reasons as people to see a counsellor. If your reason isn’t listed here, it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t reach out for help. Counsellors are trained and have expertise in human development and counselling skills. A good counsellor will collaborate with you, to support you to reach your goals.

If you are unsure if counselling is right for you at this time of your life, I’d be happy to have a short phone call with you so that you can decide if we should work together. Please reach out through the contact form on www.ebbandflowcounselling.com.au.
