Giving Your Life a Marie Kondo Makeover

After Christmas, when the parties are over, the food is eaten and the Christmas tree has been taken down, you’ll find yourself with some time on your hands. You might not be back at work just yet. Use that time well by resting, enjoying time with friends and family and getting somethings in order for 2025. You might like to consider giving your life a Marie Kondo makeover.

Marie Kondo rose to world-wide fame during the Covid-19 lockdowns. Her show on Netflix, “Tidying Up With Marie Kondo”, encouraged the participants in the show, and by extension, those watching at home, to ask if the objects in their home ‘sparked joy’. If not, the premise was to get rid of those items. Donating, throwing away, passing along and repurposing were all options.

The principle applies to all of life. By taking some time to reflect on the things you possess, how you spend your time, what you pursue and how you relate to others, you can give your life a Marie Kondo makeover. If something no longer serves you, don’t keep it as part of your routine. Saying, ‘I don’t want this for myself anymore.’ is a valid reason to discard it. If you identify a behaviour as being obstructive to you reaching your goals, stop doing it.

Ofcourse, some things are not easily discarded. Years of habit will make it difficult to stop some behaviours. If this is the case, get some support. You might need to look at the decision to discard from multiple angles before you’re happy to let something go. Rather than simply just stopping, you may need to replace that action with a more helpful one.

However, an important thing to remember is that you are in charge of what belongs in your life. You decide how you use your time. You know if something ‘sparks joy’. Giving your life a Marie Kondo makeover is part of boundary setting; knowing what to say ‘yes’ to and what to reject. If you want your life to be different in 2025, it will require making some changes, and the first step on that path is to decide what you’ll keep and what you’ll discard. Here’s to a joyful, light and fulfilling 2025!
