How Do You Know?

There’s something quietly magical about friendship. Not the big, Hollywood kind. The everyday kind. The kind that grows slowly until one day you realise: this person gets me.

I was reminded of this over dinner with a friend I met only three years ago. We found ourselves talking about how we know when someone might become “our people”. It’s surprisingly hard to name. There’s no checklist. No formula. Just a sense. A warmth. A click of recognition.

How Do You Know?
We realised it’s easier to describe what doesn’t work. The moments when something feels off. When the conversation is polite but flat. When values don’t quite meet in the middle. When you leave feeling a little drained rather than filled. But focusing on that alone would miss the real story.

Because the real story is joy.
It’s the joy of meeting someone who laughs at the same odd things you do. Someone who listens with their whole face. Someone who remembers the small details you didn’t realise you’d shared. Someone who makes you feel more like yourself, not less. That’s How You Know.

It’s the comfort of knowing you can be honest without being judged. The ease of slipping into conversation without warming up. The relief of not having to perform. Friendship at its best is spacious. It lets you be you.

And it doesn’t always arrive with fireworks. Sometimes it’s a slow burn. A gentle unfolding. A series of small, ordinary moments that quietly accumulate into something steady and good.

How do I know? When I think about the people I hold close, they all share one thing: they make the world feel kinder. Not perfect. Just kinder. And that is enough.

So perhaps the question isn’t “How do we know?” but “How does it feel?” Friendship feels like warmth. Like ease. Like coming home to yourself in the presence of another. That’s how we know. And it’s worth celebrating every time we find it.
