Be Brave, Get Help

Have the symptoms of your anxiety become worse lately? Do you recognise that you need some support? Be brave, get help and here’s how to go about it.

1 Talk to someone
Share your feelings with a trusted friend or family member. Choose carefully. This will be difficult, but breaking the silence is the first step in smashing the stereotype that real men don’t need help. You’ll be taking back you power and moving forward. The initial awkwardness will be worth it.
2 Professional Help
A friend or family member may be a good support, but you may also need to see a mental health professional. A personal referral from someone who has a good counsellor is ideal, but isn’t always possible. Your doctor will be able to refer you to a counsellor or psychologist. They will also be able to take any other health concerns into account.
3 Support Groups
Joining a support group can help you feel less alone and you’ll be able to learn from others who are in the same boat. In person and online groups are beneficial as safe spaces to talk about what you are experiencing. Beyond Blue, Black Dog and other mental health services will know what is running in your area.
4 Medication
Your doctor may suggest taking some medication to help you cope while you are getting mental health support. A doctor can safely introduce and monitor your progress with medication. A prescribed medication is a more controlled option than self-medicating with drugs and/or alcohol.

Seeking support is the first step towards taking control of anxiety. A sign of strength and courage, talking about it will empower you to make some changes. You are not alone in your experience, so be brave, get help.
