Easy ways to connect with others

As humans, we’re wired to connect with others. There are many reasons to gather together; celebrations, marking milestones, life events and transitions or just for fun. We gather as a mark of solidarity and to show that we are not alone. Connection meets a deep human need to be seen, affirmed and supported. An easy way to connect with others is to simply meet with people. These can be a meeting, a social club, at someone’s home, an outdoor sport or activity, out at a large event or a faith based gathering. If you are more introverted by nature, going to a big inside event may fill you with dread. But, there are ways to cope at any sized social event. 1 Get enough information before attending Knowing the details of an event in advance can allay your fears because you can adjust your expectations and prepare accordingly. Knowing the purpose of the gathering, the venue, who will be there and what time it ends will help you decide if you’d like to go. If you don’t have enough information to confidently attend, ask. Then, you can make an informed decision before you RSVP. 2 Aim for connection, not perfection At an event, connection happens in small, organic ways which are largely the responsibility of the guests, not the host. Forming a connection with other people at a dinner can make passable food and terrible music bearable. Look for people who seem open to speaking with someone new if you don’t know other people attending. Have some questions up your sleeve. You don’t need to forge a life-long best friend relationship, just show an interest in other people and you might learn something new or at least have a pleasant time. Make connection your goal, rather than perfection. 3 Host rather than Guest If going out is too much, invite people to your place. This puts you in control of the environment and atmosphere. You also choose who will attend. You can eat together, play board games, host a book club, cook, garden or craft together. This is a low-key option which can often be more enjoyable than going out to a large-scale function. Everyone can connect, no matter their personality, age or ability. Connection is magic because it meets the deepest needs of everyone present.
