Want a meaningful life?

Want a meaningful life? Elton John said in a 2023 with Tim Lihoreau interview, ““Just the noise you make, and the camaraderie… it is the most life-affirming experience, singing in a choir.” (1) It would appear that connection, joinging something bigger than ourselves and engaging with joy can bring a greater sense of meaning.

There aren’t many public places where we can sing in a group. Church, a large rock concert and the football in Europe are circumstances which spring to mind. But it’s rare to gather around a piano at a party and belt out a song together. Singing while we work has been replaced by listening to a podcast or making a phone call. Stacking tasks is put forward as a way to be more efficient. Sadly, it seems we have neglected engaging with our emotions in our quest to save time.

Singing in a group is a collective expression of emotion; whether that be joy, sorrow or celebration. Additionally, singing has been shown to benefit mental health as it releases the ‘happy’ chemicals which boost the mood. (2) A choir is a microcosm of society – each person has a clear part to play. If one member does not fulfil their part, the whole is affected.

Singing in a choir, much like joining a sports team, provides a sense of belonging which is important for human wellbeing. Knowing that others rely on you to play your part increases meaning and purpose. The musical teamwork of a choir can contribute to improved self-confidence, enhanced wellbeing and lift the spirits. Want a meaningful life? Try singing in a choir. As Elton John says, it’s life-affirming.
